It was close to six pm on a Saturday and even though we were promised a dry day, it had not given up on raining! Brian and I were relaxing commenting on the weekend's footy results, prepared for the 6th telephone call that day to arrive. Inevitably we received a phone call from a lovely women on a business trip who had gone to the Shell petrol garage in Whitwell and put the wrong fuel in her diesel company's Ford Galaxie rental car by mistake. She was quite troubled apparently, crying "I simply cannot believe that I've destroyed the vehicle! I'm just so used to putting petrol in my petrol car I had didn't remember that I was operating a diesel!" I just advised her to take it easy and not to worry, and also that things like this regrettably do happen. She managed to move the car into a secure area and, since it was no more than a few miles from the office, we could find the lady fairly quickly. The bad fuel was taken out so she was able to return to the motel she was staying at. Even though we got extremely wet, it was all worth it seeing her drive away satisfied and much less stressed. A fuel drain in Hertfordshire done well in my mind!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about Wrong Fuel!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Fuel contaminated with water, irrespective of whether it's petrol or diesel, is generally a significant situation to address in a car - particularly in modern day common-rail engines.

Having water or AdBlue in fuel tank is likely to result in idling issues, lumpy running, abnormal smoke and, if it is not dealt with properly, potentially broken injectors. Water in petrol is quicker to clean out compared to water in diesel - mostly due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Having said that we are able to deal with both circumstances pretty swiftly.

Bear in mind though that so long as the vehicle has been started with the fuel contaminated with water it will most likely require a new fuel filter fitted seeing that the previous one will undoubtedly be completely wet and useless.

Marine Fuel Drains

In the event that you have the incorrect fuel, or perhaps contaminated fuel (most typically water contamination or old fuel) in a boat we can certainly help drain it. Provided that the boat is either on land, or secured close enough to a car or truck parking bay we can gain access to the tanks and drain out the fuel. We've completed numerous fuel drains at marinas and boatyards across the country.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
